How to Cite Multiple Authors in APA Format (7th Edition)

Updated March 2026 · 5 min read

Quick Answer APA 7th edition multiple author rules: In the reference list, list all authors up to 20 names. For 21+, list first 19, then ellipsis (...), then last author. In in-text citations, use et al. From the first citation for any work with 3 or more authors: (Smith et al., 2023). Two authors are always listed in full: (Smith & Jones, 2023). The APA Citation Generator extension handles author formatting automatically.

The multiple-author rules changed between APA 6th and 7th edition. The most important change: in-text citations now use et al. From the very first mention for any work with three or more authors. Understanding these rules prevents one of the most common citation formatting errors.

In-Text Citations: Quick Reference

Number of Authors In-Text Format Example
1 author (Author, Year) (Smith, 2023)
2 authors (Author & Author, Year) (Smith & Jones, 2023)
3 authors (First Author et al., Year) (Smith et al., 2023)
4 authors (First Author et al., Year) (Smith et al., 2023)
5+ authors (First Author et al., Year) (Smith et al., 2023)
This changed from 6th edition. In APA 6th edition, you spelled out all 3-5 author names on the first in-text citation. In 7th edition, any work with 3+ authors uses et al. From the very first time it's mentioned in the text.

Two Authors

Both authors are always listed in every in-text citation. Use an ampersand (&) between the names inside parentheses, and "and" (spelled out) when the names appear as part of a sentence.

Two Authors — Parenthetical Sleep quality affects memory consolidation (Stickgold & Walker, 2013).
Two Authors — Narrative (in sentence) Stickgold and Walker (2013) demonstrated that sleep quality affects memory consolidation.
Two Authors — Reference List Stickgold, R., & Walker, M. P. (2013). Sleep-dependent memory triage: Evolving generalization through selective processing. Nature Neuroscience, 16(2), 139–145. Https://doi.org/10.1038/nn.3303

Three or More Authors

Three Authors — In-Text (All Citations) This finding has been replicated across multiple populations (Bandura et al., 1977).

Reference List: The 20-Author Rule

In the reference list (not in-text), list all authors up to 20 names. For 21 or more, list the first 19, add an ellipsis (...), and then list the last author's name.

6 Authors — Reference List (All Listed) Clark, A., Davis, B., Evans, C., Fisher, D., Green, E., & Harris, F. (2023). Study title. Journal, 10(2), 45–67.
21 Authors — Abbreviated Reference List Author 1, A., Author 2, B., Author 3, C., Author 4, D., Author 5, E., Author 6, F., Author 7, G., Author 8, H., Author 9, I., Author 10, J., Author 11, K., Author 12, L., Author 13, M., Author 14, N., Author 15, O., Author 16, P., Author 17, Q., Author 18, R., Author 19, S., . . . Author 21, U. (2023). Title. Journal.

Disambiguation: Same et al. Shortening

When two different works would shorten to the same et al. Form, add enough additional author names to distinguish them.

Ambiguous — Both Shorten to Same Form Smith, A., Jones, B., & Williams, C. (2021). First paper.
Smith, A., Brown, D., & Davis, E. (2021). Second paper.
Both would be cited as: (Smith et al., 2021) — ambiguous!
Disambiguated — Add Names Until Distinct (Smith, Jones, et al., 2021) — first paper
(Smith, Brown, et al., 2021) — second paper

Same Author, Same Year (Multiple Works)

If the same author(s) published multiple works in the same year, add lowercase letters after the year in both the reference list and in-text citations.

Same Author, Same Year Dweck, C. S. (2008a). Can personality be changed? ...
Dweck, C. S. (2008b). Mindset and moral agency ...

In-text: (Dweck, 2008a) and (Dweck, 2008b)

Group or Organizational Authors

When the author is an organization, write out the full name every time. In first in-text use, you can introduce an abbreviation:

Organization Author — First Use (American Psychological Association [APA], 2020)
Organization Author — Subsequent Uses (APA, 2020)
Organization Author — Reference List American Psychological Association. (2020). Publication manual of the American Psychological Association (7th ed.). Https://doi.org/10.1037/0000165-000

The Ampersand vs. "And" Rule

Context Use Example
Inside parentheses (citation) & (ampersand) (Smith & Jones, 2023)
Running text (narrative citation) and (spelled out) Smith and Jones (2023) found that...
Reference list & (ampersand) Smith, A., & Jones, B. (2023).
Et al. Punctuation: Write "et al." — lowercase, with a period after "al" only. Never write "et. Al." (no period after "et"), "et al" (missing period), or "Et al." (capitalized).

Never Count Authors Manually Again

The extension reads author metadata from journal pages and generates the correctly formatted APA reference — whether there are 2 authors or 22.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you cite three or more authors in APA 7th edition?

Use et al. From the very first citation: (Smith et al., 2023). This applies whether there are 3 or 30 authors. In the reference list, list all authors up to 20 names.

How many authors do you list in APA before using et al.?

In in-text citations: use et al. For 3+ authors (always, from the first mention). In the reference list: list all authors up to 20; for 21+, list first 19 then ellipsis then last author.

What do you do when two citations shorten to the same et al. Form?

Add enough author names to make the citations distinct: (Smith, Jones, et al., 2021) vs. (Smith, Brown, et al., 2021). Keep adding names until the two citations are unambiguous.

Does et al. Take a period in APA?

Only "al." has a period — it abbreviates the Latin "alii." The word "et" is complete and takes no period. Write: et al. — never et. Al. Or et al (without period).
